What Is the Intracept Procedure?

The minimally-invasive Intracept Procedure targets the basivertebral nerve using radiofrequency to reduce chronic lower back pain.

What Does Intracept Treat?

Vertebral endplates can become damaged overtime and cause chronic back pain. The basivertebral nerve sends pain signals to the endplates, results in chronic lower back pain that lasts 6 months or longer. Using radiofrequency ablation blocks the nerves from sending signals to the brain, therefore reducing pain in the lower back.

How Does the Procedure Work?

A patient will lay on their stomach and receive general anesthesia to prevent them from feeling pain and discomfort. A small incision is made on the lower back, where a thin tube called a cannula will be inserted. Next, an electronic probe is placed through the cannula and into the trunk of the basivertebral nerve. Heat is sent through the probe to the nerve endings in the form of radiofrequency and stops the nerves from sending pain signals.

Patients will stay in the recovery room to be monitored after the procedure, and another person will be required to drive them home. Initial discomfort and limited movement are normal, and will subside within 24 hours. Any activities that put strain on the spine should be avoided for up to 6 weeks after the procedure.

What Are the Risks?

Complication rates with the Intracept Procedure are very low, but all surgeries have a risk for infection, blood loss, and injury to nerves.

Benefits of the Intracept Procedure

This procedure gives patients another option who have not had success with other treatments and therapies that doesn’t involve open surgery. It also does not require implants and maintains the structure of the spine.
