What Is a Nerve Block?

Nerve blocks are injections that use a local anesthetic to target a nerve or group of nerves to help mitigate or fully eliminate pain. In certain blocks, anesthetic-filled anti-inflammatory medicines may be used to help in the healing of damaged nerves.

What Do Nerve Blocks Treat?

Nerve blocks can be used to treat a number of issues including chronic pain, short-term pains, or pain after surgery to name a few.

How Does the Procedure Work?

There are a number of nerve blocks available depending on the type of pain or the location pain originates from on the body. A physician will use a needle to inject the medicine. Patients may need to receive multiple injections over time.

These are a few common nerve blocks offered at pain treatment centers, but others may be available.

  • Celiac Plexus Block – This injection into the celiac plexus nerve bundle, which sends pain signals to the abdominal area, relieves pain caused by pancreatic caner or chronic pancreatitis.
  • Genicular Nerve Block (GNB) – This reduces pain in the arteries and nerves around the knees.
  • Intercostal Nerve Block – The intercostal nerve injection relieves pain in the chest region usually caused by shingles.
  • Lumbar Sympathetic Block (LSB) – This nerve block is used to reduce pain in the lower back, legs and feet.
  • Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) – The stellate ganglion block lowers relieves pain within the upper body including face, head, arms, and chest.

What Are the Risks?

Because nerve block injections only use a needle, complications are extremely low, and risk of infection at the puncture site is very rare.

Benefits of Nerve Blocks

As the source of pain is treated directly, many patients will feel instant relief within a few minutes. Nerve blocks can also be used as diagnostic tests for other forms of treatment.
